why are mormons not allowed to wear cross necklace/jewelry?
Ok so I went to this conference talking about the mormon culture since I am in the west and how as Christian can talk the Gospel to a person who is mormon.
someone brought up a point not sure if is true or not that mormon cannot wear a cross.
Why not?

Comments on why are mormons not allowed to wear cross necklace/jewelry?
many cults are legalistic..
Because they get to wear magic underwear instead
LDS (aka mormons) are allowed to wear crosses…..it’s a personal choice —- most choose not to.
the LDS focus more on the resurrection and that He lives, than on the death of Christ.
edit: LDS worship the SAME Jesus. how many did you think there were (we are a non-trinitarian religion) …..and the LDS realize that Christ paid for our sins both in the garden (when He bled from every pore) and on the cross (when He suffered a physical death). He is the Divine Savior.
They believe their Jesus suffered for their sins in the garden and not on the cross, they say the cross is a sign of suffering and they will not wear a torture device around their neck, well dah! without this sacrifce we would all go to hell, they have other symbols of their faith, the angel moroni on every temple, the CTR ring, the youth madallion, the temple garments so why not a cross?
Hm… 2 Timothy 3:5: “having a form of godliness but denying its power. ” Not that a cross is actually powerful. But it may serve as a reminder of the Christ, whose power they deny, by saying that one needs to ascribe to Old Testament Legalism.
We’re allowed to wear crosses. Go to a Mormon church in Mexico. Half of the people will be wearing crosses.
The reason many choose not to has nothing to do with legalism or denying the power of God. It has everything to do with worshiping a living Christ. The whole point of Christ dying was that He was able to overcome death and resurrect. The simple fact that He lives is the reason we are not all condemned to hell. Therefore, most Mormons prefer to worship and focus on a living Christ not a dying Christ.
You’re not supposed to think…..that sounds like idolatry to me. I don’t see any way around it. If you are wearing a cross because you think it’s powerful and you use it to worship, that is idolatry.
There is no rule against it, but it is customary not to. We worship the Lord, Jesus Christ, risen from the tomb, a living Christ, our redeemer and Savior. The cross symbolizes His death on the cross, a necessary part of His sacrifice for us, but a rather dark and macabre reminder of His death instead of the much more positive symbol of His resurrection and continuing life for us now. Death did not end His work for us and so we do not focus on that chapter of his life.
Thanks for asking. We can actually wear whatever we want, just as you can. There is no commandment or official Church doctrine that prohibits wearing of cross necklaces or jewelry.
I, personally, do not need to wear a cross to remind me of the horrifying, ignominious death of my Savior. We believe that there were actually two sacred events that helped to secure our salvation: the suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane (where He actually took upon Himself our sins) and upon the cruel cross where he gave His life that we might live. Jesus Christ was resurrected and it is that risen Lord that I worship.
It is not sacrilegious for one to choose not to wear or worship a cross. The cross in any fashion does not bring salvation to us and does not afford any spiritual blessing.
To answer the question, yes, Mormons can wear crosses…most don’t.
While the crucifixion remains an amazing sacrifice, the atonement as a whole is what has saved us all. Additionally, the reason he had to die, rather than only be atoned for our sins, was so that we could all be resurrected as He was.
We worship The Living Christ and try to live our lives according to His example, with kindness and charity and love.
There are certainly some LDS members, mostly those who have converted from a different religion to Mormonism, who still wear their cross. In general, we choose to remember His life and teachings, our Salvation through His atonement, and His resurrection.
A cross is a symbol of the dead Christ. We look towards Christ that is alive.
Christ rose from the dead. That’s what we look at.
However, we can do whatever we want.
Can I just say that I find the concept of a conference talking about Mormon culture hilarious? I bet there wasn’t even a single Mormon there.
Anyway. It’s not that we’re not allowed to wear crosses, it’s that we choose not to. We focus on the resurrected, LIVING Savior.
Would you rather us worship the dead Christ or the living? Personally, I choose to remember him as he lived and still lives. For me it is like my Father, when he died I chose not to go to the viewing, is this wrong of me? I wanted to remember him as he lived, not see him as he was lifeless.
Mormons are also Christians, just so you know. Who gave this conference? I’ve been to some of those, as well, and most of the things said about my beliefs were incorrect. Don’t believe everything you hear.
In any case, though, it’s not that we’re not allowed to wear crosses as jewelry. Of course we can, but most of us choose not to do so. We have nothing against crosses, but we choose to emphasize Christ’s resurrection rather than His death. Though we know how important the events on the cross were, and though we never forget what Christ went through on our behalf, we also prefer the hope and joy that comes with the resurrection. You won’t see crosses in our churches or around our necks for that reason, but again, it’s not as though there’s any sort of punishment for those who do wear them. I lived in the South for a long time, and many of the members down there wore them. It was a cultural thing, and nobody really cared.
Well, in my experience with mormonism, I also answered this question. I got two answers.
1. Respecting the cross would be idolatry.
2. The cross is an item that has a very negative connotation, because it killed Jesus. So, they view that they shouldn’t wear something like that.
Now, I don’t wear a cross, but I am a saved christian (ex-mormon). I believe that wearing a cross is a personal decision, and I choose not to wear one because my faith is in my heart, not my cross necklace.
God Bless! Keep spreading the Good News!
It’s not a matter of us being forbidden from wearing them or anything like that – I find crosses sometimes very beautiful myself. It’s just that the CROSS is not a ‘symbol’ found in mormon culture or worship like it often is in other Christian/Catholic Churches.
Outside of our Temples which are lavishly ornate & ornamental most of the time – our chapels are a simple beauty without symbols or idols, statutes or other religious ornamentation. In the LDS Faith we STRESS the fact that Christ’s atonement is far and away THE MOST SINGULARLY important event in all of Christianity, or known history – but that Christ although Dead – Lives today, Resurrected, in Glory and at the Right Hand of His Father, our Heavenly Father. Since the cross is really a symbol of HIS Death, we just choose to not focus on His death and the “Cross” itself because we know HE LIVES and we will live again one day eternally as well because of Him and His sacrifice for all of mankind.
It’s a choice to not wear a cross – it is NOT a command or forbidden matter at all! May I also add that it seems a SAD day when supposed “Christians” gather to learn ways to bash another Christian Faith & People…. I suppose it explains why so many makes so many false claims about what we believe…. I find it very sad indeed though.
It is not that we cannot it is that we choose not to.
The cross is a representation of the Death of Christ, and we choose to focus on the resurrection of Christ. That is why you will see spires on many of our chapels, the spire is symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We’re not forbidden to wear the cross, but as others have already pointed out, we choose not to. We don’t celebrate the death of Christ, but rather the resurrection. If someone shot your best friend would you wear a gun around your neck?
