The value of the metal is going to vary with the fineness, indicated by the Karat. 24 Karat is 100% gold, and is too soft for use in jewelry. 22 Karat is 22/24 or 91.7% gold, 18 Karat 18/24 or 75% gold, 12 Karat is 12/24 or 50% gold. In addition, there are 31.1 grams in a troy ounce. Then you have to consider how much additional you are willing to pay for the workmanship that went into the necklace.
