Can anyone explain the custom in Bangladesh to give a newborn baby girl a pearl necklace?
A co-worker is from Bangladesh. When I had a baby, she gave my daughter an 18K fresh water pearl pendant and told me that it is custom in her country. Can anyone elaborate on this for me? What does it signify?
The reason that I don't ask her is that she is very ill and in the hospital seeking treatment. It is not possible to see her at the moment.
jackip, what will not hurt who? I think that the pureness in India thing is getting close. that seems to make the most sense right now. maybe i'll expand my question...

How cool! Why don’t you just ask her?
They probably think the pearls are edible, coming from oysters, and probably it will provide for the newborn’s only meal for a long time. Perhaps they shoud include a warning label “Caution: suck don’t swallow”.
Everything I could find calls these pearls Blessing pearls, and it stems from the religious tradition of a gift given at the Christening of a baby.
In Hebrew tradition, pearls were believed to have been created from the tears Eve wept at being evicted from Eden.
the pearl is a symbol of pureness in india
it will not hurt her.
it could possible mean maybe a blessing or something along that line
why ask about it just accept it and say thank you
